Human Library:

Unjudge Someone

The Human Library is a global non-profit found in over 80 countries, where you can ‘take out’ a person instead of a book. Each human book is someone who has experienced prejudice or societal stigma, with titles such as ‘REFUGEE,’ ‘MUSLIM,’ ‘TRANSGENDER,’ etc. - and ‘reading’ them involves having a 30 minute candid conversation where you can ask them anything.

We created what has become The Human Library’s defining global platform and tagline. An unforgettable idea that encapsulates and defines their mission succinctly and distinctly:

UNJUDGE SOMEONE.

Category: Strategy / Platform

The concept of “Unjudging” began with the truth that we all judge others - it is an evolutionary trait wired into our brains. Rather than deny this, we accept it, instead inviting readers at the Human Library to take the next step; to spend time with others who they might not understand, ask them questions, listen to their stories, and ultimately, strip away those preconceptions and judgements.

The phrase has since made its way around the globe. It has been written about in Forbes Magazine, covered by CNN and the BBC, featured in viral Upworthy clips, and tweeted about by celebs like Bella Hadid and Jamie Lee Curtis. It has spread through the halls of major corporations like Amazon and Paypal, as well as institutions such as the International Monetary Fund. Medical students at prestigious universities in the US and UK are being taught to ‘unjudge someone’ as part of their curriculum, and it continues to spread worldwide.
